Winners Announced: Smith Richardson Foundation World Politics and Statecraft Fellowship
PhD candidates Elizabeth DeKeyser, Reid Pauly, and Mayumi Fukushima
Elizebeth Dekeyser, Mayumi Fukushima, and Reid Pauly have each been awarded a Smith Richardson Foundation World Politics and Statecraft Fellowship. Awards are granted to support Ph.D. dissertation research on American foreign policy, international relations, international security, strategic studies, area studies, and diplomatic and military history.
Mayumi Fukushima's dissertation titled "Exploitative Friendship: How Asymmetric Alliance Partners Manipulate One Another" aims to explain variations in intra-alliance political relationship both over time and across different alliances.
Elizabeth Dekeyser's dissertation, titled "Interpreters of the State: The Case of Islam in France," uses big-data analysis of social media and in-depth interviews and participant observation to examine under what local circumstances religious groups in France inspire pro-state attitudes and actions.
Reid Pauly's dissertation "Coercive Assurance" investigates the causes of credible coercive assurance—how coercing states convince targets that punishments will not be carried out if they comply—to better understand why some coercive demands succeed while others fail.
The purpose of the program is to strengthen the U.S. community of young scholars and researchers conducting policy analysis in these fields by supporting the research and writing of policy-relevant dissertations through funding of field work, archival research, and language training, with preference to those projects that could direclty inform U.S. policy debates and thinking.
