Please join us on Wednesday, November 30th for our next American Politics speaker. Esteban Manuel Fernandez will be presenting his work titled, “The Protest Song and Political Participation.” Here is a brief abstract:

Protest music’s most commonly hypothesized role in politics is as a facet of social movements. Qualitative work has shown that organizers and participants believe that music is important for participation, organization, and persuasion. I will provide an experimental test of these claims. Do protest songs increase willingness to participate in a social movement and does the protest song influence beliefs about the subject of the protest movement? This project is in the very early stages and I hope to pair the experimental design with an observational component.
