This workshop will follow a roundtable discussion format, bringing together advanced graduate students in the Political Science department to discuss their experiences conducting face-to-face surveys and pass along practical advice. Specific topics covered will include survey design and sampling; questionnaire and protocol design; hiring, training, and managing survey teams; data collection modalities (paper vs. various mobile platforms), and ethical considerations. Particular attention will be given to issues unique to face-to-face surveys (as opposed to online surveys), with a focus on developing country contexts. The session is not intended to cover any single topic in-depth, but is instead meant to highlight a broad range of issues political scientists conducting face-to-face surveys are likely to encounter, and to point participants to resources they may find helpful in their future work.
