Ying Gao

Biography

Ying Gao is a PhD candidate in political science focusing on political economy and comparative politics. She is also a Graduate Research Fellow at the MIT Governance Lab. Her dissertation examines citizen-state relations in urban contexts of development through the lens of urban informality. Ying holds a Master in City Planning degree from MIT and a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. Before joining MIT Political Science, she consulted for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) based in Bangkok, Thailand.

She is a Democracy Visiting Fellow AY2020-2021 at Harvard Kennedy School.
